 De regelgeving over Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of CHemicals (REACH) is al een tijd van kracht. De eerste registratiedossiers met bijbehorende extended Safety Datasheets (e-SDS) van een aantal groepen stoffen zijn vóór 1 december 2010 ingediend. Op dit moment ontvangen downstream users e-SDS, waarin per Exposure Scenario is aangegeven op welke wijze veilig met deze stof kan worden gewerkt. Lees meer.

Doelstelling

Omwille van de toenemende vereisten qua veiligheid van chemicalien, geneesmiddelen, bestrijdingsmiddelen, voedingsadditieven, cosmetica, medische hulpmiddelen e.a. blijkt er meer en meer vraag naar kennis en interpretatie van toxicologische studies en het verwerken daarvan in registratiedossiers en veiligheidsbladen. Begrip van de toxicologie en het gericht opzoeken en samenvatten van de juiste informatie zijn hierbij essentieel. Deze cursus richt zich tot veiligheidsverantwoordelijken, kwaliteitsmanagers, onderzoekers, REACH medewerkers, laboratoriumtechnologen, gezondheidsmedewerkers en allen die via hun beroep of persoonlijk hiervoor interesse vertonen. Gedurende de cursus komen de diverse toxicologiedomeinen aan bod via theorie en oefeningen of voorbeelden, met als doel een veiligheidsprofiel op te zoeken, samen te stellen en te bespreken.

Op dinsdag 11 oktober 2011 organiseerde de sectie Risicobeoordeling van de NVT een bijeenkomst over ‘Dilemma’s in Risicocommunicatie bij Rampen’. De aanleiding voor deze bijeenkomst was de Brand bij Moerdijk en de belemmeringen en onvolkomenheden in de communicatie over de mogelijke gevaren voor de volksgezondheid. Voor het verslag, klik hier.

Drilling for shale gas may pose a safety hazard if there are water wells nearby. But the controversial use of "fracking" does not appear to be a safety risk as regards water contamination. Over the past decade, the use of fracking – a mining technique involving pumping water and chemicals nderground to rupture rocks and bring trapped natural gas to the surface – has skyrocketed in Pennsylvania. The state sits atop the Marcellus shale, a deposit estimated to harbour over 14 trillion cubic metres of natural gas. Residents have long expressed concerns that fracking could contaminate drinking water.

Now a study has shown that the real safety concern is the proximity of water wells to gas wells, and that fracking does not appear to increase the risk of water contamination. 

Rob Jackson of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and colleagues analysed water from 68 drinking wells in upstate New York, where fracking is banned, and Pennsylvania. They found that wells located within 1 kilometre of an active shale-gas drilling site contained 17 times as much methane on average as those further away. The team was also able to confirm that the methane found in the drinking water came from deep within the Earth and was not produced at the surface by bacteria. The implication is that the contaminating gas came from the drilling sites. 

Explosion hazard

While little is known about how this methane might affect health, its presence at elevated levels is an explosion hazard, says Jackson. Across the US, explosions in water wells have been linked to the presence of the gas in water. A 2008 report by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources found gas drilling to be at fault in one such explosion beneath a home. Jackson says the methane is probably seeping out from cracks in gas well casings, so improving the way these are sealed should solve the problem.  

Bryan Swistock, a water resources expert at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, says that the state has already introduced new standards for casing and sealing gas wells. "It would be interesting to continue this study [now the new standards are in place]," he says.

De grasmetingen worden gedaan door organisaties die deel uitmaken van het Landelijk Meetnet Radioactiviteit in Voedsel (LMRV). Dit meetnet is opgericht in 1965 en bestaat uit zo’n 55 radioactiviteitsdetectoren die in Nederland verspreid staan opgesteld. Het RIKILT beheert dit meetnet dat hoofdzakelijk gefinancierd wordt door het Ministerie van Economische Zaken, Landbouw en Innovatie. Het onderzoeksinstituut krijgt de metingen door van de deelnemende organisaties en analyseert deze verder in detail. Het LMRV meet regulier veel verschillende  voedselproducten.

In de grasmonsters die deze week zijn onderzocht, zijn geen radio-isotopen van jodium of cesium aangetoond. Het RIVM vond deze isotopen onlangs in zeer kleine hoeveelheden in luchtstof. Deze uitslag bevestigt de verwachting dat de Nederlandse voedselproductieketen niet besmet is met radio-isotopen afkomstig uit Japan. Die verwachting was gebaseerd op berekeningen van het Back-Office Radiologische Informatie (BORI) van het Nationaal Plan Kernongevallenbestrijding (NPK), luchtstofmetingen van het RIVM en geïntensiveerde voedselmetingen door het LMRV.

De nieuwe Voedsel en Waren Autoriteit, de douane en het RIKILT werken ook al enige tijd samen bij de importcontrole van Japanse voedsel- en diervoederproducten. Sinds afgelopen vrijdag is deze importcontrole in een Europese wet vastgelegd.

 African vultures are starting to follow their Asian cousins on a deadly downward spiral.
Munir Virani and colleagues at the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi, have reported that vultures in and around the Masai Mara National Reserve have suffered a population crash of over 50 per cent in the last 25 years (Biological Conservation, DOI: 10.1016/j.biocon.2010.10.024). Over the same period the number of livestock farmers near the park soared. The pattern of vulture deaths suggests their main threat comes from the farmers, who leave dead goats laced with the toxic pesticide Furadan to kill hyenas and lions.
In south Asia, griffon vultures have been driven to near-extinction by consuming accidentally poisoned cattle carcasses - cows that had been treated before death with drugs that happen to harm vultures. Because vultures range widely and eat communally, only 1 per cent of cattle need to be poisoned to affect the whole population. This makes the use of deliberately poisoned carcasses in Africa even more of a threat to the scavengers.
The irony, says Chris Bowden of the UK's Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, is that if the poisoned carcasses eliminate vultures, it will help the hyenas and lions that the farmers are trying to eliminate to flourish. That's because there will less competition for the carrion normally eaten by the birds.
